The police, joint forces, Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh and Armed Police Battalion intensified patrolling and setting up more checkpoints across the country on Wednesday to curb crimes.

The activities of the law enforcement agencies continued alongside Operation Devil Hunt, launched on February 8, aiming at bringing the law and order situation under control.


To ensure public safety and maintain law and order in the DMP area, home adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on early Wednesday visited several key locations and intersections where police and other law enforcement agencies had set up coordinated checkpoints.

Talking to journalists at Bijoy Sarani after inspecting special security arrangements in the capital early on Wednesday, adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain said that major crimes in the capital had significantly decreased in recent times, though the number of minor offences had increased slightly.

At least 29,948 people, including 10,570 in Operation Devil Hunt, were arrested between February 8 and 8:00am on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the police headquarters.聽

In the past 24 hours ending 8:00am on Wednesday, 1,690 people, including 678, mostly leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, were arrested in Operation Devil Hunt.

DMP in a press release on Wednesday said that 500 patrolling teams were deployed between 12:00am and 11:59pm on Tuesday in the DMP area.

In Dhaka city, law enforcement agencies were seen checking people at different points as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police had set up 65 checkpoints at different places while 20 checkpoints were set up by the Armed Police Battalion.

At least 289 people involved in mugging, robbery, extortion, theft, and drug peddling, were arrested during the operations conducted in the 24 hours, according to the press release.

Meanwhile, Inter Services Public Relation Directorate on Wednesday in a press release said that 51 criminals, including teen gang member, were arrested during joint forces鈥 operations between February 25 and 26.

Meanwhile at the night following Tuesday, at least one youth was killed and three others were beaten indiscriminately on suspicion of mugging at different places in Dhaka, Gazipur and Sylhet, reports received from the districts said.
