A case was filed with the Vatara police station on Wednesday following a mob attack on two Iranians in the Basundhara residential area in the capital Dhaka in the previous day.

Police on Wednesday arrested two people in this connection. The arrested are Abdullah, 20, and Sabbir Mia, 19.

Vatara police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mazharul Islam said that police filed the case on charges of vandalism and assaulting police.

鈥楾he two Iranians have been handed over to the embassy of their country. We have sent the arrested to court seeking remand in custody,鈥 the OC said.

The police official said that the injured Iranians were given primary treatment, adding that their phones and cash were stolen and the car, which was vandalised on Tuesday, was a rented one.

The two Iranian nationals came under the mob attack on suspicion of being members of a dope gang.

They sustained injuries in the mob beating and the mob vandalised their car when they tried to flee the scene on the vehicle at about 3:00pm on Tuesday, according to police.

A video footage showing a mob comprising over a hundred people vandalising the car in the incident, went viral on social media.

Incidents of mob attacks and harassments have recently increased in an alarming way following the fall of the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024.
