
Protests against rape and violence against women and children continued for the 11th consecutive day on Monday, calling for swift trial and people’s unity to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Teachers and students of Dhaka University’s criminology department formed a human chain in front of the Aparajeo Bangla on the campus on the day calling for preventing violence against women and children.
They also demanded ensuring security for women and children.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s women front Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal formed a human chain in front of the party’s central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan area.
Speakers at the human chain demanded ensuring trial of those responsible for the rape and murder of eight-year-old girl in Magura.
Addressing the human chain, BNP standing committee member Selima Rahman said that women were not safe in society, stating that a festival of rape has begun in Bangladesh, with 11 women and children falling victims to rapists.
‘We are witnessing a grand festival of rape across the country with 11 women and children assaulted in the week following the killing of the Magura girl,’ United News of Bangladesh quoted Selima as saying.
Citing newspaper reports, Selima said that 43,000 women, including 7,000 children, were raped in the past four years, yet no justice had been meted out to them.
She questioned what the interim government did do to improve law and order and ensure safety of women amid the surge in rape incidents.
Leaders of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD on Monday at a rally in Dhaka called on all political parties and organisations to be united to resist repression against children and women across the country.
The JSD, a partner of the Ganatantra Mancha, organised the rally in front of the National Press Club protesting at repression and demanding taking steps to improve law and order of the country.
Tania Rob, senior vice-president of the party said that it was unfortunate increasing repression against children and women after victory of student-led mass uprising in July.
She called on the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus to take stern actions against those responsible for repression against children and women.
Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon general secretary of the party called on all the political parties and organisations to be united to resist the repression and improve law and order of the country.
Chaired by convener of Dhaka City East unit Mohammad Nasim, central leaders Mohammad Siraj Mia, KM Jabir, Syed Belayet Hossain Belal, Mosharef Hossain Montu and others spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
The countrywide protests were triggered by the rape and death of an eight-year-old girl in Magura on March 6.
The victim died of cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital on the afternoon of March 13.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Magura reported that a prayer session along with an iftar party was organised at the Govt Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy College playground and people from political parties and lawyers of the district were present at the event.
Speakers also demanded exemplary punishment for the rapists for raping and murdering the eight-year-old girl.
