A female journalist and a girl were allegedly raped in Dhaka and Rajshahi between Monday and Tuesday.

Incidents of rape and attempted rape continue amid an alarming rise in violence against women and children across the country in the recent weeks.


A female journalist was reportedly raped in an under-construction building in the capital’s Pallabi area early Tuesday.

Confirming the matter, Pallabi police officer-in-charge Mohammad Nazrul Islam said that the 50-year-old victim filed a case against eight named individuals and eight unnamed individuals on Tuesday afternoon.

Two accused were arrested on the day, he said, adding that the incident reportedly happened in an under-construction building at Pallabi from 1:00am till 8:00am.

Police officer Nazrul said that the victim mentioned that she worked for a daily.

The victim was sent to the One Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the evening, the officer added.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that an 18-year-old college girl was allegedly raped by a youth at Tanore upazila in Rajshahi on Monday afternoon.

The victim’s mother filed a rape case against three people including, Iqbal Hossain, 28, and his father Ansar Ali with the Tanore police on Monday night.

According to the case statement, Iqbal, a neighbouring grocer, tactfully took the college girl inside his grocery while she was going to her teacher’s house.

When the girl entered the grocery, Iqbal’s accomplice Abdul Malek lowered the shutter when Iqbal attacked the girl and raped her inside his shop, the statement said. 

Tanore police officer-in-charge Afzal Hossain said that the girl was sent to the One Stop Crisis Centre at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for medical examinations. 

‘We are trying to arrest the accused as they have gone into hiding,’ he added.
