A newly formed student platform, ‘Ganahattyakari Awami League Nisiddho Karan Andolan’(the movement for banning the Awami League) on Sunday announced a two-week-long programme titled ‘July Revives’, demanding banning of the Awami League and justice for alleged mass killings.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at Madhu’s Canteen of Dhaka University by Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad, a student of the Department of Bangla at Dhaka University and one of the organisers of the platform.
At the press conference, Musaddiq said that under this programme, activities such as meetings with the families of martyrs and the injured, public outreach, discussions with leaders of various political and social organisations, engagements with civil society figures, online and offline campaigns, and wall writings will take place to drum up support for banning the Awami League and justice for the genocide victims.
AB Zubair, another key organiser of the platform and also a student of the Islamic Studies Department at Dhaka University, said, ‘Through a mass movement, we will fulfill promises of July.’
He also said that they would continue their movement until the Awami League was banned and justice was ensured.
The press conference was attended by Salahuddin Ammar from Rajshahi University, Masud Rana from Jagannath University, Ibrahim Khalil from Dhaka College along with representatives from various institutions.
As there was a consensus among students and the public on this demand, they spontaneously participated in their previous programmes, the representatives said, adding that to further strengthen the movement, they are now announcing the ‘July Revives’ programme for the next two weeks.
Earlier on March 21, a group of Dhaka University students launched this platform at the base of the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University, aiming to build a nationwide movement to ban the Awami League.
As part of their initiative, a sit-in programme and a mass iftar party were organised on Friday evening at the same venue.
