The High Court on Wednesday granted bail to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case filed over allegedly showing disrespect to the national flag.

The bench of Justice Md Atoar Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza passed the order while disposing of a rule issued on February 4, which had asked the government to explain within four weeks why Chinmoy should not be granted bail.

The case was filed against Chinmoy and 18 others on October 31, 2024, accusing them of dishonouring the national flag during a program in Chattogram. He was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, and was sent to jail the following day after a Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate rejected his bail plea.

Violence erupted on the Chattogram court premises on November 26 after the bail rejection, when Chinmoy鈥檚 followers, reportedly armed with machetes and other local weapons, clashed with police and lawyers. Advocate Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death during the mayhem.

Chinmoy, now a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, remained in custody since his arrest.
