Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed’s availability for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA is in danger after he sustained a side strain during their fourth Twenty20 international against Zimbabwe on Friday.
The injury forced him to be sidelined for the fifth and final match against the visitors, where Bangladesh suffered an eight-wicket defeat on Sunday.
According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s chief physician, Debashish Chowdhury, the 29-year-old underwent a scan last evening.
‘Taskin suffered an injury to his 12th rib on the right side while diving in the last (4th) game. He also had considerable pain today, and we are sending him for a scan,’ said Debashish on Sunday.
‘In cases of side strain, initially there is quite a bit of pain for the first two–three days, whether there is a fracture or not.’
Taskin, who was adjudged the player of the series for his eight wickets in four matches, told reporters that he was still suffering from the pain.
‘I still have pain. I will do the scan and later can say about the severity of the injury, but it seems 50-50,’ he said.
BCB president Nazmul Hasan said that they would consult doctors in the USA to treat the pacer if required.
‘If needed, we will talk to doctors in the USA. If we can expedite his recovery, then it’s one thing. But if not, then we will have to take some other decision,’ he told the media on Sunday.
Bangladesh are likely to announce their squad for the T20 World Cup today as the team is scheduled to play a three-match series against the USA on May 21, 23, and 25 as part of their preparation for the World Cup that start on June 1.
