Bangladesh women鈥檚 national team began their Asia Cup 2024 campaign with a seven-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in their opening game in Dambulla on Saturday.
Batting first, Bangladesh were struggling early on as they lost four wickets within the powerplay, and five of their top six getting dismissed did not help their cause.
However, skipper Nigar Sultana Joty held up one end to ensure that they came out of the initial chaos.
Courtesy of her unbeaten 48 off 59 balls, alongside a 14-ball 25-run cameo from Shorna Akter, Bangladesh ended on 111-8. Rabeya Khan was the only other batter to reach double figures as she scored 10 off 13 balls.
For Sri Lanka, Udeshika Prabodhani and Inoshi Priyadharshini picked up two wickets each, while Sugandika Kumari, Kavisha Dilhari, and Chamari Athapaththu picked up a wicket each.
In reply, depending on opener Vishmi鈥檚 fifty, Sri Lanka chased the total down with ease as Bangladesh produced a sorry effort on the field, displaying several misfieldings which never let them put pressure on the Lankans.
Spinner Nahida Khatun picked up all three wickets for Bangladesh as they saw Sri Lanka chase the total down with 17 balls in hand.
