BPL issues to be sorted soon
The activities of the constitution reform committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, led by convener Nazmul Abedin Fahim, were postponed on Saturday.
Now, the committee will be ‘changed and expanded,’ having all the stakeholders involved in Bangladesh Cricket. These were the major decisions taken by the board during a meeting held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
The Dhaka-based clubs protested to dissolve the reform committee over a proposed amendment in the constitution of the governing body of cricket in Bangladesh. As a result, the First Division Cricket League was derailed, which was scheduled to start on January 20.
‘A committee was formed for constitutional reform. According to today’s [Saturday’s] board meeting, their activities have been postponed,’ Mahbub Anam, one of the directors, told reporters after the meeting.
‘The committee will be changed and expanded in the future. The terms of reference will be sorted out. Then the committee will begin their work involving the stakeholders,’ said Mahbub.
The dispute began when the clubs became aware of the fact that the proposed reforms in the constitution of the BCB would decrease the number of the councillors in category 2 from 76 to 30 (reportedly) as well as the number of the directors of the Dhaka-based club from 12 to four.
The proposed amendments also include the dissolution of the CCDM—a body within the BCB that maintains the Dhaka-based cricket. The total number of BCB directors would be reduced from 25 to 21 as per the proposals.
However, Mahbub mentioned that the reform committee did not submit any changes to the board or the National Sport Council yet, and the news circulating isn’t outrightly true. However, the board thought that there should be more transparency in the process.
‘The constitution is such a matter that there is nothing private. Because it’s public information. We thought that the things that have come to light should be stopped,’ he said.
‘Similarly, the committee needed to be changed and improved because all the stakeholders should be in it. The board thought so. The decisions have come according to that. Mahbub added.
However, it wasn’t confirmed when the First Division Cricket League would start. Earlier, the cricketers said that they were assured by the BCB president that the league would start within this month.
‘The chairman of the CCDM will discuss with the clubs. I think that cricket should begin for the interest of Bangladesh cricket,’ said Mahbub.
BPL issues were addressed
The ongoing controversies regarding the BPL were addressed in the board meeting.
‘All the franchises will be called. Whatever happened, we’ve accepted it and addressed it,’ said Iftekhar Ahmed, the other director present at the press conference.
‘We will discuss it with all the stakeholders in the next 48 hours. We thought there was a communication gap. The players need to be assured. The contractual obligation will be met,’ added Mahbub.
The women’s BPL will not be rushed either, said the board of directors. A refined salary structure for the umpires was approved in the meeting.
Standing committee announced
The chairmen of all the standing committees except two were announced. Iftekhar said that the chairmen would form the full committee within two weeks.
BCB president Faruque has kept marketing and commercials, whereas Najmul Abedin will oversee the cricket operations, among others.
The media committee will be handled by Iftekhar. The process for filling the vacant board member positions was also discussed during the meeting.
