The authorities of National University have decided to reintroduce admission tests for the honours level students from the next year.

The authorities are also scheduled to introduce a pilot basis mandatory certificate course on technical issues from 2025 for the honours level students.

These initiatives would make the students skilled and improve the quality education in the university, said the NU vice-chancellor Professor ASM Amanullah.

The NU, established in 1992, has over 35 lakh students and around one lakh teachers, officers and staff in around 2,300 government and non-government colleges at present, according to the vice-chancellor.

The university offers bachelors (honours), bachelors (pass), professional degrees, master of advanced studies, post graduate, diploma, MPhil and PhD.

There are widespread allegations against the NU’s role in equipping its students with skills relevant to the country’s job market amid concerns about its contribution to the nation’s development goals, especially in science and technical education.

Against this background, the university authorities have taken some new initiatives.

Professor ASM Amanullah told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday that currently the admission seekers for the honours level chose some colleges and subjects, and based on their Cumulative Grade Point Average, they would get admitted.

‘From 2025, we will hold admission test only for the honours level students. They can still choose colleges and subjects as per their results,’ he said.

He also explained that they had observed that the NU honours level students were not skilled enough. ‘This is the first step to improve the quality of education in the university.’

The VC mentioned that as per the second step, we will make mandatory a certificate course on different technical courses for the honours level students soon.’

The duration of the course will be six months to one year, he said, adding, ‘We are planning to introduce a pilot project on the course in 250 to 300 colleges across the country before making it mandatory.’

The proposed subjects of the course are cyber security, information and communication technology, data management, graphic designing, freelancing, hospitality and different trade courses, which would be divided in three groups and the students could choice any group, the VC further said.

He also mentioned that based on the duration of the course, they would provide certificates.

Replying to a question, he said that they would make plan for the students studying with other degrees later.

Some 66 per cent of NU graduates remain unemployed as their subjects and skills do not often match the criteria set by private sector employers, according to Tracer Study on Graduates of Tertiary-Level Colleges survey, released in September 2021, by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies.
