No scope for special privilege: adviser
The students of Government Titumir College in Dhaka city on Sunday continued their blockade of a road stretch in Mohakhali, demanding the transformation of their institution into a university.
Protesting students blocked the Amtali point of Mohakhali for two hours from about 6:30pm to 8:30pm as part of their pre-announced ‘Barasat barricade to north city’ programme, causing terrible congestions in one of the busiest city points on the first working day after weekend.
Education adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud told journalists after the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council meeting on Sunday that there was no scope to provide special privilege to Titumir College.
He said that there was no rationality for such a protest giving an ultimatum for the transformation of the college into a university.
The interim government would not take any illogical decision amid such an ultimatum that could turn a burden in the future, said Wahiduddin.
The education ministry clearly said that the cancellation of the Dhaka University affiliation of the seven colleges was logical and an expert committee led by the University Grants Commission chairman professor SMA Faiz was working to form a separate university merging those seven colleges, added the adviser.
He criticised the now ousted Awami League government and authorities for establishing so many public universities within a short period as half of the 55 public universities were established in the past seven years.
Wahiduddin also urged the students not to take any programmes causing the public to suffer terribly or hampering the academic activities of general students.
Titumir College students denounced the education adviser’s statement along with his call for restraint.
The protesters, however, said that they kept the blockade programme somewhat relaxed to allow the Biswa Ijtema devotees to travel to and from the Ijtema venue.
