The Bangladesh Football Federation announced a cash reward of Taka 1.5 crore to the SAFF Women’s Championship 2024 winning Bangladesh team on Saturday.
The decision came out after the first meeting of the newly-elected BFF executive committee, led by its president, Tabith Awal, at the BFF House.
Bangladesh women’s team clinched back-to-back SAFF titles, defeating hosts Nepal 2-1 in the final on October 30, just four days after Tabith became the new president of the federation.
The team received a grand welcome upon their return home from Nepal on October 31.
Earlier, the ministry of youth and sports handed over a cheque of Tk 1 crore while the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced Tk 20 lakh reward for their historic success. Chief adviser to the interim government professor Muhammad Yunus accorded a reception to the team as well.
Bangladesh women’s team clinched their maiden title of this regional tournament when they beat the same opponent 3-1 in the sixth edition final in September 2022.
The declaration from the BFF must have encouraged the players, as the federation made no announcement of rewards when the girls won their first title.
At the time, former BFF senior vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedy and former vice-president Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan gave away Tk 50 lakh each from their personal funds.
The decision to recognise the women’s team in a reception ceremony was one of 28 agendas in the almost four-hour meeting that also finalised chairmen for 11 standing and 11 ad-hoc committees.
Tabith was made the chairman for three standing committees – national team’s management committee, the finance committee, and the emergency committee.
BFF senior-vice president Imrul Hasan was named as the chairman of the professional football league committee, while Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, who was re-elected as a member in the BFF elections, will continue as the women’s wing chair.
Each of the four vice-presidents Nasser Shahrear Zahedee (development committee chairman), Fahad Mohammed Ahmed Karim (marketing committee chairman), Sabbir Ahmed Arif (Dhaka metropolitan football league committee chairman), and Wahid Uddin Chowdhury (internal audit committee chairman), got their separate portfolios.
Among the executive committee members, Amirul Islam Babu was named as the media committee chairman, while Kamrul Hasan Hilton was named as the technical committee chairman.
Doctor Skeikh Forhad was selected from out of BFF elected members and was given the medical committee chair, completing the 11 standing committees.
