The 70th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest poets of Bangla literature Jibanananda Das will be observed today.
Born on February 17, 1899 in Barishal, Jibanananda Das belonged to the group of poets named Kallol, who tried to shake off Rabindranath Tagore’s poetic influence.
Although the poet did not receive much popularity in his lifetime, his unique talent was realised immediately after his death, with the discovery of many of his manuscripts.
Jibanananda began writing poems at an early age. When he was a student, his poem titled Barsa-Abahan was published in the ‘Brahmabadi’ in 1919.
His poems inspired a pride in Bengali nationhood, especially in the ‘60s and during the War of Independence.
His volumes of poems include Jhara Palak, Dhusar Pandulipi, Banalata Sen, Mahaprthibi, Satti Tarar Timir, Rupasi Bangla and Bela Abela Kalbela.
Principally a poet, Jibanananda Das also wrote essays, short stories and novels. Many of his novels were published posthumously, including Malyaban and Sutirtha.
His complete works had been published in 12 volumes under the title Jibanananda Samagra from Kolkata, India.
The poet passed away on October 22, 1954 in Kolkata.
