Today is the 118th anniversary of birth of renowned educationist and playwright Nurul Momen.

Born on November 25, 1906 at Alfadanga in Faridpur, Nurul Momen’s debut play ‘Rupantar’ was broadcast from Dhaka station of All India Radio in 1942.


His much-acclaimed play titled Nemesis, written in the background of the Bengal famine, was published in ‘Shanibarer Chithi’ in 1945, which secured him a distinct place in Bangla literature.

Nurul Momen joined the faculty of law at Dhaka University in 1945. His belles-letters ‘Bahurupa’ was published in 1948. In the same year, he left for England for higher education, and obtained his law degree from London University in 1951.

He used to satirise the inconsistencies and conflicts in contemporary society through many characters in his plays.

His other works include ‘Jadi Eman Hata’, ‘Naya Khandan’, ‘Alochhaya’, ‘Ayaner Antarale’, ‘Shatkara Ashi’, ‘Ruplekha’ and ‘Jeman Ichchha Teman’.

For his contribution to Bangla literature, he received the Bangla Academy Award in 1961and Ekushey Padak in 1978.

Nurul Momen passed away in Dhaka on February 16, 1989.
