A meeting of the advisory council on economic affairs on Tuesday approved a proposal from the ministry of home affairs for purchasing 200 double cabin pick-ups for the Bangladesh Police.
Presided over by finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed at the secretariat, the committee also approved executing the purchase in the current financial year without any tender.
The approval has been given against the backdrop of a ban on procurement of new cars by the ministries and divisions under the current budget.
The ban excludes procurement of vehicles to replace more than 10-year-old vehicles.
It has been reported that some 1,000 police vehicles were damaged, almost one third of them beyond repair, following the change in regime in August 5 last year.
The finance adviser also presided over a meeting of the advisory council on government purchase to approve a proposal from the power division on purchasing per unit electricity from the coal-fired Matarbari Power Plant at Tk 8.4475 (7.66 US Cent). Â
The price includes Tk 5.84 for fuel cost and Tk 2.6 for capacity payment.
According to projections, around Tk 2,17,004 crore would be required under the 30 years’ purchase agreement.    Â
The committee also approved a dozen other proposals, including importing three cargoes of liquefied natural gas.  Â
Earlier, the advisory council on economic affairs also approved the purchase of a package under the Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services Project linked to smart cards, also without any tender. Â
It also approved two other proposals.
One of them is to sanction $20 million for out-of-court settlement of the case in a US district court filed by Smith Co-generation (Bangladesh) Private Limited against the Bangladesh Power Development Board on the establishment of a 100MW barge mounted power plant in Haripur, Sylhet.
The other is selling of 1.36 acres of land of Tangail Cotton Mills located 1.5 kilometres away from the mill.       Â
