
The National Sports Council on Tuesday formed ad-hoc committees of seven sports federations, over than two months later the country鈥檚 sport鈥檚 governing body announced ad-hoc committees of nine sports bodies in November last year.
The seven sports federations鈥攕wimming, table tennis, volleyball, karate, weightlifting, bodybuilding, and fencing鈥攈ave new committees made up primarily of former athletes, businessmen, service holders, and representatives from BKSP and services teams.
Mahbubur Rahman Shahin, the former general secretary of the Bangladesh Swimming Federation, has returned to his job, as has Golam Mohammad Alamgir, the previous committee vice-president and Max Group chairman.
Former swimmer Mohammad Mahfizur Rahman Sagor, who competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, was named to the new committee, which included a president (Navy Chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan), two vice-presidents, one general secretary, one joint secretary, one treasurer, and thirteen members.
Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation鈥檚 previous vice-president wing commander Mohiuddin Ahmmed (rtd), returned to the new committee as president, while former national weightlifter and coach Lt Col Md Shahidul Islam Chowdhury (rtd) was named as the general secretary of the 17-member committee.
Micro Fibre Group managing director MS Zaman was named as the president of the Table Tennis Federation, while former player AM Maksud Ahmed was named as the general secretary.
Vice-president of the previous committee, Khandakar Hasan Munir, has returned to his job, while former player Begum Tahmina Tarmin was named another vice-president and another former renowned TT player, Nasimul Hasan Koci, was named as the joint secretary.
In volleyball, Giant Group director Faruque Hassan has been named as the new federation president while former national team captain Bimal Ghosh Bhulu as the general secretary, ending Ashiqur Rahman Miku鈥檚 two-decade-long reign in the post.
Shahzada Alam, a former player and businessman, was named Karate Federation president, while previous committee vice-president Moazzem Hossain returned as general secretary.
Additional IGP Mostafa Kamal was named as the Bodybuilding Federation president, while former player M Kamruzzaman was named as general secretary of the 17-member committee.
Kamrul Islam, a freedom fighter and businessman, was named Fencing Federation president while Basunia M Ashiqul Islam was named general secretary.
The previous nine鈥攁thletics, kabaddi, hockey, chess, billiard and snooker, basketball, bridge, tennis and squash鈥攆ederations got the ad-hoc committees in November 2024.
The development came about two months later when the ministry of youth and sports removed all the heads of 42 sports bodies, excluding hockey, among these nine federations on September 10, 2024.
Earlier, a search committee was formed in August 2024 to bring changes to the country鈥檚 sports arena.
