Recently appointed director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Syed Jamil Ahmed said on Wednesday that the BSA needed reforms for building an inclusive society and that a ‘reform cell’ would be formed to turn the academy into an arena of people’s democratic art space.

He also said that the academy was now focusing on three priority issues, while corruption under the former DG would be investigated.

Running regular activities of the BSA in a corruption-free, transparent atmosphere is the academy’s short-term priority, Jamil said at a press conference held at the seminar hall of the National Theatre Hall of the academy on Wednesday.

At the event, he presented his lecture titled Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy: re-running, reform and conversion of the new vision, management principles and urgent steps.

‘Many clauses of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Act 1989 do not create a clear concept about the vision of the academy. For these reasons, it has been used as a subservient institution to the government instead of creating art,’ said Jamil.

‘We demand a total of 3 per cent allocation of the GDP for the cultural sector and the academy will be accountable to its executive council,’ added Jamil.

Jamil also recommended that the government should appoint any cultural personality as a president to the BSA like Bangla Academy.    Â
