Poets, activists and experts said on Saturday that shrine-centred activities should be increased and participation of women needed to be promoted to build an inclusive society.
They made the statement at a discussion titled Ganamanusher Jagrata July organised by July Community Alliance Mirpur at Shah Ali Mazar in the capital.
Fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Mohammad Azaz and poet and thinker Farhad Mazhar, among others, spoke at the event.
‘Attacks on shrines will not be continued in the new Bangladesh achieved through a student-led mass uprising,’ Farida said, adding that women’s participation in social activities should be increased.
Farhad Mazhar said that the public sphere must be made democratic and developed so that the people did not have to depend on the state.
‘As people are the symbol of sovereignty, they should be empowered,’ said Farhad Mazhar.
The event was inaugurated on Friday.
The two-day event comprising art workshop, graffiti exhibition, book fair, medical camp and musical events in the shrine area ended on Saturday.Â
