The 7th edition international conference on Sufi Philosophy and Cultural Practices for Perfected Humanity began on Sunday at Natmandal Auditorium of University of Dhaka.

The two-day event was jointly organised by Dhaka University’s Department of Theatre and Performance Studies and Darul Irfan Research Institute, Chattogram.

It was inaugurated by DU vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.

‘Sufism has philosophical and historical facts which hold people with different thoughts together. We are passing a critical time since the student-led mass uprising and Sufism can create an initial platform to discuss about humanity in this circumstance,’ Niaz Ahmed Khan said, adding that partnership between different educational institutes and organisations should run without political influence.

Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha, Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Professor Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan attended the programme as special guests while convener of the conference committee Shaman Moishan delivered the welcome speech.

Keynote paper of the programme was presented by Professor Syed Jamil Ahmed, founding chairman of Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Dhaka University. Chittagong University Professor Quazi Mostain Billah and Dhaka University Professor Israfeel Shaheen held a discussion on the paper.

The event includes seminars, discussions and Sufism based performances.
