The Jamaat-e-Islami has withdrawn from the decision to participate in the upazila parishad elections and sent instructions accordingly to all its grassroots committees.
It was earlier optimistic about contesting the polls in some places where the party have strong base.
Immediately after Eid-ul-Fitr, its central leadership gave instructions to the field level, Jamaat spokesperson Matiur Rahman Akanda confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday.
Several Jamaat leaders said that the party earlier took a decision to contest in some places in the upazila parishad elections that would be held in four phases starting from May 8.
They said that the party sent a message to the grassroots about selecting the upazilas where there is a possibility to win.
The upazila and district committees concerned were tasked with taking decisions and nominating candidates, they said.
However, the party changed its mind before April 15, the last date for submission of nomination papers for the first phase.
The party, however, has not made any official announcement about this.
‘Jamaat is not joining the upazila elections as the party’s decision is to boycott the polls under the Awami League government,’ Matiur Rahman said.
He said that those who have submitted nomination papers have been asked to withdraw them.
Jamaat along with the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and other opposition parties did not participate in the January 7 parliamentary elections.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is not participating in this upazila election either.
