The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said that democracy-loving people would boycott the forthcoming upazila parishad elections slated for May 8 as they boycotted the January 7 general elections. Â
‘People cannot change the government by voting now and the Awami League government has snatched the voting rights of people,’ BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, while distributing leaflets with a call to boycott the upazila parishad elections in Banglamotor area of the capital.
As the Awami League is in power for the past 17 to 18 years without voting, money is being smuggled out of the country, he alleged.Â
Banks have been emptied and the price of every commodity has sky rocketed with the people being unable to buy the most essential commodities like food, he said.
‘This government is sitting in power by force while people are imprisoned,’ he said, adding that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is also imprisoned.
‘So the people of the country rejected the January 7 dummy election; 95 per cent people rejected that election. This government wants to hold yet another dummy election, upazila election,’ Rizvi said.
He alleged that the government is resorting to different tricks to justify their stay in power. But those who believe in democracy will boycott this upazila election, said the BNP leader.
