
Politicians and freedom fighters on Wednesday at a commemoration meeting said that the Awami League government destroyed the electoral system of the country and as a result the voters were not interested to participate in the ongoing upazila parishad elections.
Freedom fighters of the War of Independence of 1971 organised the meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity to mark the first anniversary of the death of freedom fighter and founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra ZafrullahChowdhury which was observed on April 11.
Vice-chairman of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party,Hafizuddin Ahmed, said that the Awami League government destroyed the electoral system and as a result the voter turnout in the first phase of upazila elections on Wednesday was low.
Hafiz Uddin said that theAwami League government also destroyed spirits of the War of Independence of 1971.
He called on all to work for establishing the spirits of the war for which ZafrullahChowdhury took part in it for establishing a democratic Bangladesh.
Chaired by president of JatiyatabadiMuktijoddha Dal Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat, central leaders of BNP FazlurRahman, RuminFarhana, AB Party member secretaryMojiburRahmanMonju, BhashaniOnusariParishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, GonoOdhikarParishad president NurulHaqueNur, freedom fighter Nayam Jahangir, Muktijoddha Dal general secretary Sadeque Khan聽 and others spoke at the programme.
Naripakkha leader ShireenHuq, also wife of Zafrullah and son BarishChowdhury were present at the programme.
