
A case has been filed against four people, including the presiding officer, for negligence in Rajnagar upazila parishad elections of Moulvibazar.
Rajnagar upazila nirbahi officer and also assistant returning officer Suprabhat Chakma filed the case on Tuesday.
Akash Das, the presiding officer of Panchanandpur Government Primary School Centre and Zakir Hossain, the assistant presiding officer of the centre, have been arrested among the four accused in the case, Rajnagar police officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdus Salek said.
They were handed over to court on Wednesday.
The police are trying to arrest the other two, the police officer added.
On May 21, the second phase of the sixth upazila elections was held at Rajnagar.
According to the case statement, the officials have committed crimes of illegally assisting outsiders in voting, dereliction of duty and exercising undue influence in the elections.
According to the police and local people, some people tried to stamp ballot papers at the polling station of Panchanandpur Government Primary School between 2:00pm and 2:30pm on Tuesday.
In Rajnagar upazila elections on Tuesday, it was seen that the voter turnout was low. Only a few centres had long queues of women voters.
Although the local administration, the Border Guard Bangladesh, the Rapid Action Battalion, the police and other intelligence agencies were on duty, there have been complaints of agents of rival candidates being forced to leave some centres, casting fake votes, entering polling centres and stamping the ballot books.
It was seen by ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent at some polling stations that the ballot papers bore signatures and seals of polling officers.
The UNO filed the case with the police station when a video of outsiders stamping the ballots at the Panchanandpur Government Primary School centre of Kamarchak union of the upazila went viral at about 3:30pm on the day.
The investigation officer in the case, sub-inspector Md Sawkat Masud Bhuiya, said, ‘The matter is now under investigation. The investigation into stamping ballot papers at the Panchanandpur Government Primary School centre on Tuesday has begun.’
He also said, ‘I will try to collect more footage. I will go to the spot and talk to local people. All will be identified through investigation.’
OC Abdus Salek said that necessary action would be taken against those who stamped ballots and tried to cast fake votes.
