The parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of information and broadcasting has directed the state-run Bangladesh Television to prioritise the recommendations from the local lawmakers in appointing district correspondents.

They said that at a meeting on April 21, the Jatiya Sangsad watchdog body recommended caution in appointing BTV correspondents, and the ministry at the Sunday鈥檚 meeting, informed the standing committee that following its recommendation, recruitment of BTV correspondents in eight districts was carried out by January 21.
These appointments have been made taking into account the verification reports from the superintendents of police of the districts concerned, while the process of appointing correspondents for the state television in eight more districts is underway. These positions became vacant through retirement or death of the previous correspondents.聽
As per the existing policy for appointing BTV district correspondents, skills, experience and reputation are to be considered. Apart from this, the appointments are to be made based on the recommendations by a five-member recruitment committee and police verification reports.
The officials said that in the previous meeting, Afzal Hossain, a member of the committee, complained that no development programme or news of Kishoreganj district was ever aired on BTV.
The BTV correspondent for Kishoreganj had never covered any programme even after requests, he told the committee and drew attention of the state minister for the ministry to change the correspondent, the officials said.
The Sunday meeting of the standing committee later asked the BTV management to give priority to the recommendations of the local lawmakers in appointing correspondents.
After the meeting, a press release sent by the Parliament Secretariat said that the standing committee gave necessary instructions to the ministry in this regard.聽
The committee also recommended that letters should be sent to the deputy commissioners to inquire about the BTV correspondents.
Presided over by committee chairman Kazi Keramat Ali, the meeting was attended by members of the committee state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat and lawmakers Shafiqur Rahman, Ali Azam and Abdus Salam.
