The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders on Monday said that the ruling Awami League ruined the country through destroying every institutions.
鈥楢wami League assumed power forcibly abusing police, administration and other state agencies. Today they have ruined the country,鈥� BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while addressing a discussion in Dhaka.
Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal organised the discussion on the occasion of the 43rd death anniversary of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club.
Fakhrul said that the United States imposed sanction against former army chief Aziz Ahmed for his involvement in corruption.
He also raised the issue of unprecedented corruption committed by former police IGP Benazir Ahmed and the wondered as to how he had been allowed to flee the country.
鈥楢wami League is not sincere about election. If any election is held, Awami League will not get more than 10 seats,鈥� he said, adding that the AL leaders talk tall, but if an election was held under an impartial election commission then it would be proved who is popular.
The BNP leader said that whether this nation would survive, and whether it would be able to run independently 鈥� it all depends on whether this government could be defeated through peaceful elections or not.
鈥楩or 15 years, AL has not only destroyed democracy and politics, but also destroyed the economy,鈥� he said, adding that prices of gas, electricity, vegetable and rice are unbelievable while children cannot be given eggs and milk properly.
Stating that two cows were sold in Magura at Tk 40 lakh, Fakhrul said that on one side people are not able to eat and on the other side some people are buying cows for Tk 40 lakh.
鈥楾he economy in this country has been driven to a point where it is making the poor poorer and the rich richer,鈥� he said.
Fakhrul said that Awami League wanted to erase the fact that BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman is the harbinger of independence.
鈥榃e never deny Sheikh Mujib鈥檚 contribution. But how can we deny the contribution of that man [Ziaur Rahman] whose declaration incepted the War of Independence,鈥� he said.
Mahila Dal president Afroza Abbas presided over the programme while its general secretary Sultana Ahmed moderated.
