The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has decided to announce a fresh programme over several issues, including the release of its ailing chairperson, Khaleda Zia, an abnormal increase in commodity prices, rampant corruption, and increasing foreign debt.
The party decided on new programmes at a meeting of its standing committee held virtually on Monday night.
The party鈥檚 acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, presided over the meeting, a BNP statement signed by its secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said.
It said that the party聽 standing committee had expressed satisfaction over the successful protest rally held in Dhaka and other cities and districts in the past week demanding an unconditional release of Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul said that the party鈥檚 acting chairman would discuss with the relevant leaders before announcing the date of new programme demanding the unconditional release of Khaleda Zia.
He said that the members of the standing committee felt that the abnormal increase in the prices of daily essentials, the rise in inflation, unprecedented corruption, and the taking of loans from foreign banks were putting people under additional pressure and creating a debt trap.
A decision was taken to increase public awareness through the distribution of leaflets, rallies, and processions about the issues.聽
The meeting strongly condemned the recent killing of two Bangladeshis by India鈥檚 Border Security Force along the Lalmonirhat and Thakargaon borders, he said.
He added that the meeting also condemned the government鈥檚 inaction over the border killings.
BNP feels that such killings are happening because this government has failed to create the necessary pressure on India to stop border killings, the statement said, adding that the meeting demanded immediate measures to stop border killings.
Alongside Tarique and Fakhrul, the party standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salah Uddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku attended the meeting.
