Separate metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on Sunday placed former public administration minister Farhad Hossain and ex-Awami League lawmaker for Barishal-2 constituency, Shah-E-Alam, on remand for varying terms in separate murder cases during the recent student-led mass uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina government.

The courts, responding to separate applications, allowed the police to take Farhad and Shah-E-Alam in police custody for five days and three days respectively for interrogation in the cases.


Another metropolitan magistrate court in the capital on the day also sent ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 energy affairs adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury to jail when he was produced before the court on completion of his four-day remand in another murder case lodged with Badda Police Station in the city.

Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Sanaullah, responding to a petition filed by Adabor police station inspector Abdul Malek seeking a 10-day remand, allowed the police to take Farhad in their custody for five days for interrogation in the case of killing garment worker Md Rubel in the Ring Road area in the capital on August 5, the court police inspector Md Asaduzzaman said.

Farhad was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion at Eskaton in Dhaka Saturday night.

Garment worker Md Rubel鈥檚 father Rafiqul Islam filed the case against 156 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Farhad with Adabor police station on August 22.

About 400-500 unnamed people were also made accused in the case.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that metropolitan magistrate Mehedi Hasan, responding to a police plea seeking a seven-day remand, allowed the police to take Shah-E-Alam in police custody for three days for interrogation in the case of killing college student Md Naimur Rahman in the capital鈥檚 Gulshan area during the recent student-led mass uprising.

A mob detained the former AL lawmaker on September 14 and handed him over to Gulshan police.

According to the case documents, Md Naimur Rahman, 22, a student of Gulshan Degree College joined an anti-discrimination rally in front of Subastu Nazar Valley shopping mall on July 19. At about 4:00pm, Awami League goons attacked the rally, firing indiscriminately at the protesters. Many people, including Naimur, got injured in the attack and were rushed to nearby AMZ Hospital in Badda. Naimur succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Naimur鈥檚 father Khalilur Rahman later filed the case against 64, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over the killing.

The other accused in the case include Sheikh Rehana, Hasina鈥檚 son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Nur-e Alam Chowdhury Liton, Mojibur Rahman, Nasrul Hamid Chowdhury and Mohammad A Arafat.

Meanwhile, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saifuzzaman sent Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury to jail after the police produced him before the court in a case lodged over the murder of Sumon Shikder in capital鈥檚 Badda area during the recent Student Movement Against Discrimination, BSS reported.聽

Tawfiq-e-Elahi was sent to jail when police produced him before the court after ending his four-day remand and pleaded to keep him behind bars until completing the probes in the case.

On September 10, Dhaka Metropolitan Police鈥檚 detective branch arrested Tawfiq-e-Elahi at Gulshan in the capital.

On September 11, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Ali Haider placed him on a four-day remand.

Sumon Shikder, 31, was killed in police firing beside Fuji Tower in the Badda area on July 19.

His mother Masuma Begum filed the case against 179, including Sheikh Hasina with the Badda police station.
