
Different courts in Dhaka, Sunamganj and Rajshahi on Monday sent former planning minister MA Mannan, journalist Shyamal Dutta and former Awami League lawmaker Enamul Haque to jails in cases over incidents during the student-led mass uprising that ousted the AL regime on August 5.
Two other metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on the day granted police petitions seeking the courts’ permission to show former law minister Anisul Huq, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee president Shahriyar Kabir arrested in more murder cases.
The Sunamganj Speedy Trial Tribunal on Monday sent former planning minister MA Mannan to jail after rejecting a bail petition in a case over the attacks on students and people during the mass uprising in the district, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.
Judge Nirjan Mitra of the tribunal passed the order in a case filed by Hafiz Ali, brother of an injured victim in clashes with the law enforcers and Awami League supporters in the district on August 4, the plaintiff’s lawyer Mashuk Alam said.
Law enforcement agencies arrested Mannan at his home in Shantiganj area under Jagannathpur upazila on September 19.
The district witnessed a mixed reaction over Mannan’s arrest. One group staged demonstration demanding the release of Mannan, while another group opposed it and demanded punishment for him and accused him of amassing illegal wealth.
On Sunday, students of a number of schools and colleges, under the banner of general students, took position in front of Shantiganj upazila parishad along Sunamganj-Sylhet road, demanding the release of Mannan.
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Monday sent National Press Club former general secretary and daily Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutta to jail in the case of killing Fazlu in the capital›s Bhashantek area during the students’ movement.
Metropolitan magistrate Mahbub Ahmed passed the order as police produced the journalist before the court after ending his seven-day remand in the case.
On September 16, Shyamal and journalist Mozammel Haque Babu were caught by locals from Dakshin Maizpara along Porakandulia border area under Dhobaura upazila in Mymensingh district. Later, the duo was handed over to the police.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Staff Correspondent in Rajshahi, referring to court inspector Amanullah Aman, reported that a senior judicial magistrate court in Rajshahi on Monday sent a former AL lawmaker for Rajshahi-4 constituency, Enamul Haque, to jail in a case over attacking student-led protests on August 5.
Judge Md Hadiuzzaman of Rajshahi Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-1 sent him to jail after rejecting his bail plea.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested Enamul at Adabar in Dhaka on September 16. Enamul, also the chairman of ENA Group, was elected lawmaker for the Rajshah-4 constituency thrice with AL ticket in the general elections in 2009, 2014, and 2018.
BSS reported that the Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court of Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury on Monday allowed separate police petitions to show former law minister Anisul Huq and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun arrested in separate murder cases lodged with the city›s Khilgaon and Uttara West Police Stations.
They were shown arrested in the cases of killing Hafez Zubair on August 5 in Khilgaon and Maulana Sadikul on July 19 in Uttara.
According to another BSS report, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque also allowed a police petition to show Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee president Shahriyar
Kabir arrested in two murder cases filed with the capital›s Jatrabari Police Station.
The court passed the order when police produced Shahriyar before the court after ending his seven-day remand in the domestic worker Liza murder case. Police then pleaded to show him arrested in two more murder cases.
Of the two cases, one was lodged over the killing of Rafikul Islam in Jatrabari area on July 19. Rafikul was shot by police on July 18 and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital the next day.
The other case was filed over the death of Arif in the capital’s Jatrabari area on July 19.
