The Jagannath University vice-chancellor, Professor Md Rezaul Karim, on Wednesday said that student politics on the campus would not be abolished but the culture would be changed.

‘Patronage-based student politics will no longer be tolerated,’ he said, adding that the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union elections would be held as soon as possible.

During a meeting held at the university’s central seminar auditorium with the student representatives of different departments and batches involved in the recently initiated reform movement for the university, he also expressed a stance against autocratic practices by any student organisation under any political party.

‘We must work together to combat autocracy and achieve collective success,’ he said, addressing some key issues, including accommodation shortages.

‘Providing housing for 10,000 students is not an easy task,’ he said and added that it would take time to solve the problem, which was not met in the past 19 years.

Regarding the establishment of a second campus, he mentioned that once the consultants were being appointed under the master plan for the university, the work of handing over the second campus project to the Bangladesh Army would begin.

‘I also met with the education adviser and the secretary to request an extension of the project timeline as the current work is behind schedule,’ he mentioned, expressing hope to hold the next convention on the new campus.

The meeting was also attended by the university’s acting registrar Professor Md Sheikh Giash Uddin, proctor Professor Muhammad Tazammol Hoque, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall provost Professor Sabina Sharmin, and Student Welfare director associate professor KAM Rifat Hasan.
