
Two metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on Tuesday allowed the police to take Awami League presidium members and former ministers Mohammad Faruk Khan and Abdur Razzaque in police custody for two days for interrogation in separate murder cases.
Another metropolitan magistrate court in the capital also allowed separate police pleas to show former Election Commission secretary Md Jahangir Alam arrested in a murder case and AL leader Monwarul Islam Chowdhury Robin arrested in five more cases lodged with different police stations in Dhaka.
Officials said that Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sanaullah, responding to a police petition, allowed the police to take Faruk Khan in their custody for two days for interrogation in the case of killing Bangladesh Nationalist Party activist Mokbul in 2022.
‘A team of Rapid Action Battalion-1 arrested Faruk Khan at the Dhaka Cantonment area. Later, RAB handed him over to the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police at about 1:00am on Tuesday,’ DMP spokesperson Talebur Rahman said.
Court officials said that the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate, Mahbubul Haque, responding to a police plea, allowed the police to take Abdur Razzak in their custody for two days for interrogation in the case of the shooting businessman Abdul Wadud to death in the capital’s Nilkhet area during the government job quota reform protests on July 19.
DB inspector Jahangir Arif produced Razzaque before the court and sought to take him in their custody for seven days for interrogation in the case.
Abdur Razzaque was arrested at the capital’s Eskaton area on Monday.
Bangladesh Sangabad Sanstha reported that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Nurul Huda allowed separate police petitions seeking the court’s permission to show Jahangir and Robin arrested in six cases.
Jahangir, also a former home secretary, was shown arrested in a case lodged with Uttara West Police Station over the killing of Bangladesh Airlines Training Centre student Omor Nurul Absar, 22, during the anti-quota movement.
AL leader Robin, however, was shown arrested in five cases lodged over the murders of trader Md Jasim, Md Sagar, Wahid Miah, Jahirul Islam Shuvo, and an attempt to murder a Dhaka University student.
