Interim government chief adviser professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday said that a search committee would be established to facilitate the formation of the new Election Commission.

He told political leaders that such a committee would be formed, as the political parties at a dialogue urged the chief adviser to organise credible general elections within a justified timeframe after bringing about required reforms.

The Saturday’s dialogue was its second spell held at the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna.

Saying that the interim government should not take too long a time, intending to bring reforms in every sector, they viewed that the political regime that would come to power through general elections should ideally be tasked with carrying out the detailed reforms.

Most of the parties attending the dialogue also expressed their dissatisfaction at the interim government’s alleged failure to control the abnormal price hike of the essential commodities, meeting insiders said.

On Saturday, the chief adviser held the second spell of the ongoing dialogue with Gonoforum, Jatiyatabadi Samamana Jote, 12-Party Alliance, Liberal Democratic Party, Bangladesh Jasod, Jatiya Party led by Andalib Rahman, Jatiya Mukti Council, National Democratic Movement, and Bangladesh Labour Party.

The chief adviser held the first spell of the dialogue on October 5 with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Ganatantra Mancha and some other left parties.

Emerging from the dialogue, Gonoforum president Mortafa Mohsin Montu told reporters that they expressed their dissatisfaction over the abnormal price hikes of the essentials at the dialogue.

‘We have also suggested that the next general elections should be held in a free, fair and credible manner after holding required reforms within a justified timeframe’ Mostafa Mohsin Montu said.

Gonoforum emeritus president Dr Kamal Hossain led the party delegation at the dialogue.

Chief of 12-Party Alliance and chairman of Jatiya Party faction Mostafa Jamal Haider said that they asked the interim government to take immediate steps to break the syndicates of the deposed Sheikh Hasina to rein in the price hikes.

Spokesman of the alliance Sahadat Hossain Selim said that they had also urged the interim government to give next general elections after holding required reforms within a justified period.

Jatiyatabadi Samamana Jote chairman Fariduzzaman Forhad said that they had demanded next general elections within 90 days of the interim government.

Bangladesh Jasod president Sharif Nurul Ambia said that they had opposed the interim government decision to cancel the observation of March 7 as a historic day.

Jatiya Mukti Council secretary Faiezul Hakim also said that they had urged the interim government to hand over power to an elected government within a justified timeframe.

Bangladesh Jatiya Party chairman Andilib Rahman said that the interim government should ban the Awami League led alliance from politics.

Liberal Democratic Party chairman Oli Ahmed demanded next general elections within the shortest possible time after immediate reforms.

The chief adviser was accompanied by several advisers at the dialogue.

They informed the attending delegations of the political parties about the development of the reform measures undertaken so far, special assistant to the chief adviser Mahfuz Alam told reporters.

Referring to Muhammad Yunus, the special assistant said that the chief adviser told the political leaders that a search committee would be established to facilitate the formation of the new Election Commission.

Muhammad Yunus also told the delegations that decisions about banning Awami League would be taken based on discussions with political parties.

Press secretary Shafiqul Alam and deputy press secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder also attended the briefing.
