Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, factions who failed to secure their names on the newly announced committees of Dhaka College and Jagannath University on Wednesday demanded immediate cancelation of the committees.

Terming the newly formed committees as ‘pocket committees’, the factions’ leaders staged demonstrations on the campuses saying that they were deprived as their contribution to the organisation were not recognised.

Approved by its president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, the JCD announced convening committees of 11 units, including Jagannath University and Dhaka College on Tuesday to form complete committees through conventions by next 45 days.

Immediately after the announcement, the Dhaka College JCD faction brought out a procession from the college and held a rally in front of the college blocking the road on Tuesday evening.

The faction also staged day-long demonstrations on Wednesday demanding immediate cancellation of the Dhaka College committee incorporating those leaders and activists who sacrificed much during the Awami League regime.

Former vice-president of Dhaka College JCD unit Tazbiul Hasan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that many of the active leaders and activists were deprived of posts on the new committee.

‘We have sacrificed a lot to fight against discrimination for a long time but we are deprived now,’ said Tazbiul.

Tazbiul alleged that an unidentified group exploded several crude bombs near the demonstrations on Tuesday and Wednesday to intimidate the protesters.

‘We want to know why we are deprived,’ said Tazbiul, claiming that many of the new committee members were not much active in the past.

The protesters also burnt effigies of Rakib and Nasir and announced that they would continue their protests till cancellation of the new committee.

Dhaka College JCD unit convener Piyal Hasan said, ‘We have informed the central committee about the matter. Central committee will take steps to resolve the matter.’

Jagannath University JCD faction on Tuesday evening also staged a demonstration setting fire on the streets in front of the campus gate protesting at its 21-member new committee, reported JnU Correspondent.

Jagannath University JCD unit former human rights secretary Yasir Arafat claimed that many members who entered politics after August 5 were on the committee but many senior and experienced activists were excluded.

‘We want participatory politics,’ said Arafat.

Former literary and publishing secretary Abdus Shukur Aiman claimed that no one from the ninth and 11th batches were included but Chhatra League activists who joined JCD after August 5 were included in the committee.

‘We do not accept this committee for even a single day,’ said Aiman.

The protesting activists and leaders also called for intervention of the BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to reorganise the committees.
