A group of leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement that led the student-led mass uprising in July and August in 2024 on Monday announced that they would form a new student organisation.
Abu Baker Majumder and Abdul Kader, two key student leaders of the mass uprising and former coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination, made the announcement at a press conference held at the Madhu’s Canteen on the Dhaka University campus.
They said that the new political student organisation would emerge from the strength of the July-August uprising and the slogan of the student organisation would be ‘Students First, Bangladesh First.’
Addressing the press conference, Abu Bakar said that people from different ideologies participated in the anti-discrimination student movement and expected that students from different organisations would join the new student organisation.
He said that they were yet to finalise the name of the new organization and the date of launching.
The student leaders also said that they would visit public and private educational institutions and select the organisation’s leaders democratically.
Abdul Kader said that their student organisation would not be a split of the Students Against Discrimination. ‘The Students Against Discrimination will exist as an umbrella organization.’
‘The new student organisation is a separate initiative. It aims to re-establish student politics for each of the students in Bangladesh,’ said Rifat Rashid, a former coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination.
‘The new organisation will be independent. It will have its own constitution and policies.’ Said Rifat.
