The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday urged the country’s Islamic scholars to remain careful about the newly emerged slogan of the ‘second republic.’

The party standing committee member Mirza Abbas made the call while addressing an iftar party organised by the BNP in honour of Islamic scholars and orphans at the Ladies Club in the capital.

‘I do not want to criticise. But, I do not understand what the “second republic” and the “second independence” mean.’

BNP standing committee member Khondoker Mosarraf Hossain presided over the event, attended virtually by the party acting chairman Tarique Rahman as the chief guest.

Student and youth leaders of the July-August mass uprising launched a new political party, the National Citizen Party, on February 28 and announced that the election of a Constituent Assembly and the establishment of a second republic were their goals.

Abbas alleged that an attempt was being made to create division among the nation through such slogans, and a group dressed like the Islamic scholars was giving vent to this.

He claimed that a conspiracy was going on at home and abroad to drive a wedge between the Islamic scholars and the BNP to allow foreign forces to intervene in the country.

Abbas urged all to remain vigilant in this regard.

Tarique Rahman, addressing the event virtually, said, ‘If we can encourage each other to do good deeds and discourage each other from doing bad deeds, we can build the country and the society.’

He urged Islamic scholars to consider whether there was a way for Bangladeshi Muslims to celebrate Eid on the day when Muslims living in the rest of the world celebrate the festival, similar to how religious festivals of other faiths are observed.
