Gono Odhikar Parishad-backed Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad on Monday protested at the introduction of quota for the family members of injured and martyred in the July-August mass uprising in secondary and higher secondary institutions.

The student organisation president Md Bin Yamin Mollah at a press conference at the Dhaka University’s Madhu’s Canteen said that a stronger and more intense movement would be launched if all existing quotas in educational institutions and the railway sector were not abolished.

Protesting at the introduction of a 5 per cent quota for the family members of injured and martyred in the uprising, Yamin demanded the proper medical treatment and rehabilitation of the injured and the families of the martyrs.

‘We fought for the abolition of quota system but it has returned just in seven months. By reinstating the quota system, the government has taken such a decision that contradicts the spirit of the mass uprising,’ mentioned Bin Yamin.

He claimed that the government had reinstated quotas in the education institutions for political purposes.

Pointing out that this is being used as a means to attract people, Bin Yamin said, ‘Through the quota system, they want to show that those who will support them in the upcoming national elections will be given these benefits.’

He also raised the allegations of misuse of the Students’ Against Discrimination platform. Yamin said, ‘Those who talked about neutrality under the banner of the platform are no longer neutral.’

The student leader raised three-point demand at the press conference, including the abolition of all existing quotas in all educational institutions and the elimination of the dependant quota in railway jobs.

Sanaullah Haque, convener of the organisation’s DU unit, and Rakib Hasan, member secretary of the DU unit, also spoke at the programme.
