A Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal activist was allegedly killed, and three others were injured as two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party clashed at Raujan in Chattogram over removal of a banner featuring a former Awami League lawmaker.
The deceased, Komor Uddin, 32, was a resident of Uttar Satta village under ward 2 of Holdia union. He was the father of two children.
The incident took place on Saturday night at Amirhat Bazar at Holdia union under Raujan upazila, said Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of the Raujan police station.
The injured are Jamal Uddin Talukdar, 40, Osman Gani, 39, and former joint convener of the union Chhatra Dal unit, Mohammad Mohiuddin, 41.
They are currently undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
According to police, at around 9:00pm on Saturday, Komor and a group of Juba Dal activists were conversing at the Amirhat Bazar Business Welfare Association office, where a banner featuring former AL lawmaker, ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, was displayed. The group ordered its removal before leaving the premises. Shortly afterwards, they were waylaid by a group of 9-10 people, leading to a clash.
Sub-inspector Alauddin Talukdar, in-charge of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital police outpost confirmed that Komor Uddin was taken to the hospital at around 12:30am, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
It is alleged that the attackers were followers of Mohammad Mohiuddin, a member of the BNP’s Raujan upazila convening committee.
Mohiuddin, however, denied his involvement in the incident.
‘Those who are making allegations against me were engaged in internal conflicts,’ Mohiuddin said, adding that the allegations against him are false.
‘The youth was killed after being stabbed with a sharp object,’ the OC said, adding that they have learnt that the deceased young man was an activist of Juba Dal.
The other people involved in the clash are activists of the BNP, the OC said.
‘The violence was triggered by a dispute over removal of the former AL lawmaker’s banner,’ the OC said, adding that further investigation is underway in this regard.
No formal complaint has been filed yet, the officer said.
