A team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested former Awami League Dhaka south city unit general secretary Shah Alam Murad in the Uttara area in the capital Dhaka on Thursday.

Shah Alam was arrested 10 days after leading a procession of about 100 AL leaders and activists in the capital.

DB joint commissioner (south) Nasirul Islam said that Shah Alam was arrested at about 1:00pm.

‘We have kept him at the DB office on Mintoo Road. Shah Alam is accused in several cases, including murder cases filed over killing students and people during the student-led mass uprising,’ said Nasirul.

The police official said that they would produce him before court today.

At about 7:00am on April 6, led by Shah Alam, about 100 AL Dhaka south city unit leaders and activists brought out a protest procession from the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and the procession ended at the party’s headquarters on Bangabandhu Avenue.

After the fall of the autocratic Awami League regime amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024, many senior AL leaders either went into hiding or were arrested as most of the leaders are facing charges of murder during the uprising.

Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India and took shelter in India following the fall.

The interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus took office on August 8, 2024.
