Dhaka stocks advanced for the fifth consecutive session on Monday, as investors continued buying selective stocks in anticipation of quick gains amid volatile trading, market operators said.

DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, increased by 5.68 points, or 0.10 per cent, to close at 5,564.63 points on the day, after adding 61.38 points in the previous session.

The DSE posted Tk 888.57 crore in its total turnover on the day compared with that of Tk 908.77 crore on the previous session, which was nearly a 55-day high.

Before Sunday, the last time the DSE posted its turnover above Tk 900 crore mark was on May 13, standing at Tk 968.02 crore.

Market operators said that the market came down to such a point after the prolonged negative vibe that a little positive momentum would help it advance.

A recent IPO refund may have helped the market, as investors injected fresh funds into the market, they said, adding that many investors sold their shares before the end of the financial year 2023-24 for various reasons, and reinvested in the secondary market after the start of the new financial year.

The media reports that the government might allow its employees to trade in shares might have a positive influence on the market, they added.

In the past 20 weeks, the DSE moved forwards in only six weeks.

Of the 394 issues traded on Monday, 164 advanced, 197 declined and 33 remained unchanged.

The DSE Shariah index increased by 0.31 points, or 0.02 per cent, to close at 1,215.14 points on the day.

The DS30 index finished negative on the day, by losing 4.59 points, or 0.23 per cent, to finish at 1,959.89 points.

On the sectoral front, pharmaceutical issues exerted the highest turnover, followed by the textile and general insurance shares.

EBL Securities in its daily commentary said, ‘Investors were active on both sides of the trading fence, resulting in mild volatility of the market indices throughout the session.’

Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa topped the turnover chart on the day with its shares worth Tk 36.67 crore changing hands.

Far East Knitting & Dyeing Industries, Orion Pharma, Asiatic Laboratories, Beach Hatchery, Aftab Automobiles, Salvo Chemical Industry, British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Rupali Life Insurance and Central Insurance were the other turnover leaders.
