
Dhaka stocks gained slightly on Monday after falling for three sessions, as investors remained active on both sides of the trading fence amid volatile trading, market operators said.
DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, increased by 2.17 points, or 0.03 per cent, to close at 5,484.96 points on the day, after losing 23.99 points in the previous session.
The total turnover of the Dhaka bourse witnessed a slight rise too on the day.
On Monday, the total turnover of the Dhaka bourse stood at Tk 662.24 crore, comparing with that of Tk 622.25 crore in the previous session.
Market operators said that a section of investors chose to adopt a cautious approach, staying on the sidelines and closely monitoring market movements.
In the past few weeks, the market experienced a positive surge after a prolonged period of bearish sentiment.
In the past 21 weeks, the DSE moved forward in only seven weeks.
Of the 397 issues traded on Monday, 140 advanced, 191 declined and 66 remained unchanged.
The DSE Shariah index decreased by 0.72 points, or 0.06 per cent, to close at 1,203.43 points on the day.
The DS30 index lost 7.17 points, or 0.37 per cent, to finish at 1,944.29 points.
On the sectoral front, pharmaceutical issues exerted the highest turnover, followed by the food and textile shares.
EBL Securities in its daily commentary said, ‘The market witnessed mild volatility throughout the session as investors remained active on both sides of the trading fence. Cautious investors remained observant of the market’s trend ahead of the announcement of the monetary policy statement.’
Orion Infusion topped the turnover chart on the day with its shares worth Tk 57.23 crore changing hands.
Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa, Taufika Foods and Lovello Ice-cream, Eastern Bank, Far East Knitting & Dyeing Industries, Salvo Chemical Industry, Global Heavy Chemicals, Beach Hatchery, Sonali Paper & Board Mills and Gemini Sea Food were the other turnover leaders.
