Actress Jyoti Sinha said that artistes must immerse themselves in a role to leave a lasting impression on the audience.
‘It is important for an artiste to get into a character. When I am staging a production, I focus on immersing myself in the role so that I can leave a lasting impression on the audience,’ said Jyoti Sinha, who has earned acclaim acting in productions, including Kohe Birangana, Leima, Happy Days, Monpahiya, Sree Krishna Kirtan, Ingal Adahar Pala, Rudhirrangini, Remand and others.
She plays four characters in Kohe Birangana, which is a theatrical adaptation of Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s Birangona Kabya.
Moulvibazar-based theatre troupe Manipuri Theatre will stage the 100th show of the play at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday. The monodrama has been adapted and directed by Shubhashish Sinha.
‘We launched the studio theatre of Manipuri Theatre at Ghoramara village under Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar with the premiere show of Kohe Birangana on December 24, 2010. Manipuri Theatre has produced many theatre productions after opening the studio theatre hall in Ghoramara in 2010,’ added Jyoti.
‘I have received a huge response from the audience, critics and cultural activists for the play Kohe Birangana. We have staged the play across the country and India. I am looking forward to staging the 100th show of the production at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday. We will stage the play’s 99th show on Thursday,’ mentioned Jyoti.
‘In the past four years, we have only staged Kohe Birangana in theatre festivals or marking special occasions. I am thankful to many co-artistes and crew members who have been with us during our journey,’ said Jyoti, who received many awards at home and aboard for her acting in theatre productions and films.
She also spoke about the challenges facing theatre troupes operating outside Dhaka.
‘Theatre troupes outside Dhaka find it difficult to stage plays regularly due to a lack of artistes. In Kamalganj, we stage monodramas but it is difficult to stage productions which require a large number of artistes,’ mentioned Jyoti, who also leads a dance troupe named Jyotinandan.
She also spoke about her forthcoming ventures.
‘I am preparing myself for acting in Rabindranath Tagore’s play Raktakarabi and short films. I will also work as a director of a dance drama which will be produced by Moulvibazar district Shilpakala Academy,’ ended Jyoti.
