Bangladeshi theatre troupe Chandrakala Theatre staged its 18th production ‘Sheikh Saadi’ at the Dinabandhu Mancha in Siliguri, West Bengal, India, on Sunday.

The play was part of the four-day-long seventh Prasanta Majumder Smriti Natyo Utshab, organised by Siliguri Engeet.

‘Sheikh Saadi’ is a monodrama on the life of the legendary Persian poet Saadi Shirazi, written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by HR Anik.

The play begins with Saadi receiving an invitation from Amir Khusrau, a poet and scholar of the royal court of the Delhi Sultanate. Although delighted by the invitation, he is unable to visit Delhi due to health problems. He decides to spend his remaining days in Shiraz city of Iran, where he spent his golden years, including his childhood and youth.

The play is set between the fajr prayer and morning, depicting Saadi packing his writings to send to his friend Amir Khusrau while reminiscing about his memories and learning from other great poets and scholars of his time.

The monodrama was also performed by HR Anik, the general secretary of Chandrakala Theatre.

The stage was designed by Fazle Rabbee Sukarno, with lighting by SM Angan and Kazi Nazrul.

Hamidur Rahman Pappu designed the background music, and Sujon Mahabub was the art director of the production.
