Inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun on Monday claimed that 64 prisoners were arrested after 826 inmates of the Narsingdi district jail broke free on Friday.

Ten prisoners have surrendered to a Narsingdi court, he mentioned while briefing reporters after visiting the jail.

‘This was one of the most shameful incidents in the history of Bangladesh,’ said the IGP, adding, ‘Drastic action will be ensured against the people involved in the incident.’

He also said that nine members of the banned extremist group Ansar al-Islam managed to flee the jail and remained traceless, mentioning, ‘at least 21 arms and 1000 bullets were recovered from the arrested prisoners.’

On Friday, 826 inmates of the Narshingdi jail broke free as complete anarchy descended on the district, where angry protesters set government offices on fire, blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway and confined local ruling Awami League leaders to their residences.

The jail break occurred around 4:00pm amidst a frenzied demonstration going on in front of the jail located along Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

The inmates set fire to the jail before breaking its main entrance and taking out the inmates in scores.
