
At least six inmates died as the army opened fire to prevent an attempted jailbreak at the Jamalpur district jail on Thursday.
In another incident, some inmates sustained injures as guards fired at them during an attempt to break free the Chattogram central jail on Friday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Chattogram staff correspondent reported.
Jamalpur district jail super Mazharul Islam on Friday told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident occurred at about 1:30pm on Thursday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, he said adding that inmates set a fire inside the prison and took the jailer hostage.
Firefighting units brought the situation under control in the evening, said jail super Mazharul.
‘Eight people, including inmates and guards, are currently undergoing treatment,’ he added.
At Chattogram central jail, senior jail super M Monzurul Hossain told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that some inmates tried to escape the jail in the presence of the army personnel standing guard.
‘Now the situation is under control and no one received major injuries. From Saturday, inmates will be granted permission to talk with family members, which was suspended since last week,’ he said.
