A Rangpur court on Tuesday remanded former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Shariful Islam in police custody for three days in connection with the killing of martyr Abu Sayeed, a BRUR student.
The judge of the metropolitan cognizance court, Asaduzzaman passed the order after Shariful was produced before the court by the police with a five-day remand prayer, said ABM Zakir Hossain, superintendent of Rangpur Police Bureau of Investigation.
The SP also said that PBI arrested him at about 11:00pm on Monday night from one of his relative鈥檚 house at Alamnagar area of the city.
According to the police, Shariful has been accused of instructing law enforcers to open fire on July 16 when Abu Sayeed was shot dead by police at the university gate during the quota reform movement in Rangpur.
Earlier, assistant sub-inspector Amir Ali and constable Sujan Chandra Roy were also arrested in the same case.
On August 18, Sayed's elder brother, Ramzan Ali, filed the case mentioning 17 individual鈥檚 names, including the former Inspector General of Police Abdullah Al Mamun, along with 30-35 unidentified others.
Later, a supplementary statement was filed adding seven names, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in the face of a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the English department at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur and a coordinator of the anti-quota movement, was the first student killed in police firing during the movement.
A video footage showed the police shoot Abu Sayeed, standing alone with arms stretched out and chest expanded, to death during the quota reform demonstration in front of the entrance of the university.
