Six arrested, JCD expels accused leader

Five police personnel, including the Dhaka Metropolitan Police New Market Zone assistant commissioner Tarik Latif, sustained injuries early Friday as a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader’s followers attacked the New Market police station to snatch their arrested leader.

The snatch attempt had failed, said the police.

The attack took place at about 4:10am when the police brought Mohammad Hossain Mithun, 35, central joint general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to the police station after arresting him from the city’s 300-Feet area over an incident of hacking traders.

Chhatra Dal, meanwhile, in a press release issued on Friday evening, said that it had expelled Mithun from the organisation.

Three of the four other injured policemen are posted at the police station—sub-inspectors Arob Ali and Firoz Ahmed, Constable Mohammad Anower, while the fourth one is Dhanmondi East police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Khondoker Mesbah Uddin, according to the police.

‘The police filed a case over the incident in which six people have been arrested,’ officer-in-charge of the police station Md Mohosin Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He said that they arrested Mithun in a case filed over hacking traders in front of Multiplan Centre shopping mall on Elephant Road in Dhaka city on the night of January 10.

New Market police sub-inspector Omar Faruk filed a case against 15 named and 30–35 unnamed accused  with the police station on Friday.

‘About 50–100 people suddenly swooped on us when we were just about to enter the police station,’ Omar Faruk told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, adding that the attackers invaded the police station with brick chips, iron rods and hockey sticks.

The six arrested in the case over attacking the police are Md Bashir Islam, 21, Md Hasan, 21, Md Emon, 25 Md Masum Mahmud, 32, Md Al Amin, 30, and Md Akbar Ali, 21, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The police said that a Dhaka court on Friday put Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal central joint general secretary Mohammad Hossain Mithun on two-day police remand in two cases. One of the cases is over hacking traders on Elephant Road and the other is related to the New Market police station attack.

Arrested Md Bashir Islam has also been placed on one-day remand in the police attack case. The rest of the five arrested were sent to jail.

Mithun became the joint general secretary in the 260-member Chhatra Dal’s full central committee formed on June 15, 2024.

During a visit on Friday evening at the New Market police station, most of the officials, including the officer-in-charge, inspector investigation and assistant commissioner of the Zone, were found absent.

Senior joint general secretary Md Wahidul Islam Dipu of the ECS Computer City housed in the Multiplan Centre building had filed the case with the New Market police naming 11 people, including Sanjidul Islam Emon who is named in a government list of criminals and his associates, on January 11 following the hacking incident.

The case also accused 20–25 unnamed individuals.

Plaintiff Wahidul, also elder brother of a man going by the name Pichhi Helal, also identified as a criminal in a government list, in the case document said that Sanjidul Islam Emon launched the attack.

Investigation officer of the case Sub-inspector Ershad Hossain said that Mohammad Hossain Mithun was not named in the case but police investigation found evidence of his involvement in the hacking incident.

Earlier, Asifur Rahman Jhantu, 32, and Md Kausar Mridha, 24, were arrested in the case filed over hacking of Multiplan Centre shop owners’ association joint general secretary Ehteshamul Haque, now undergoing treatment at a city hospital.

Several Chhatra Dal leaders in the Dhanmondi and Kalabagan units said that Sanjidul Islam Emon and Mithun forged a good relation while both were in jail.

According to the jail authorities, Emon was released from Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj on August 15, 2024. He was sent to jail on December 8, 2015.

In a press release issued on Friday evening Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal said that it expelled its central committee joint general secretary Mohammad Hossain and assistant general secretary Riazul Hasan Rasel for breaching organisational discipline. The release was signed by its Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.
