The newly launched student organisation, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad, on Thursday formed a three-member investigation committee to probe Wednesday’s factional clash centring the announcement of its central committee amid protests.

Rifat Rashid, who was announced the senior joint member secretary of the organisation, resigned from the central committee on Thursday.

‘As part of an organisational process, we have formed  an investigation committee to identify those who were involved in  Wednesday’s unwanted incident,’ the convener of the central committee, Abu Baker Majumder, told a press conference at Madhu’s Canteen on the Dhaka University campus on Thursday.

He also said that the three-member investigation committee included Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury, Touhid Mohammad Siam and Nayeem Abedin.

The organisation leaders at the press conference also said that committees would be formed across the country in the future.

On Wednesday, conflict surfaced over the announcement of the new student organisation led by a group of leaders of the Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July-August mass uprising, forcing the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5, 2024.

‘The committee will submit its report within seven working days and organisational action will be taken against those involved in the incident,’ said Baker.

He also said that Rifat was not part of the new organisation’s committee, as he submitted his resignation letter.

After the press conference, Rifat on his Facebook account said that he resigned as his name was included in the committee without his permission.

He also wrote that he denied the post of the senior joint member secretary as he was initially offered the post of member secretary and then the post of chief organiser and the spokesperson.

‘When my name was proposed for the post of the senior joint member secretary, I clearly informed them that I will not be in the organisation,’ wrote Rifat.

At the press conference, a 205-member convening committee was announced, incorporating students of different public and private universities, madrasas and colleges. However, no written list of the committee was provided.

Wednesday’s six-member committee announcement created conflict, leading scuffles at the launching venue with the allegation of cornering private university students.

The scuffles that left several private university students, including female ones injured sparked protests.

Blocking Banglamotor road in front of the Students Against Discrimination office, a group of private university students on Wednesday night announced human chain programmes in the private university campuses on Thursday and road blockade on Friday, protesting at the committee formation and the scuffles.

The faction, however, suspended all demonstrations Thursday morning.

‘There was misunderstanding over the committee formation. We had discussions regarding the committee and decided to suspend the demonstrations,’ MJH Monju, convener of the Student Against Discrimination’s combined private university unit, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

A group of students of the Government Titumir College Thursday morning held a rally on their campus, condemning Wednesday’s conflict that left several private university students, including female ones, injured.

A group of students under the banner of combined private universities in Chattogram held a rally in the port city against the attack on private university students on the DU campus.
