
Two Awami League supporters were killed in a clash with Bangladesh Nationalist Party supporters at Mohinipur village of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi on Friday over establishing supremacy in the area.
The deceased were identified as Md Amin, 28, son of Khorshed Mia of Mohinipur village, and Md Bashar, 30, son of Barak Haji of the same village. Both of them were known to be supporters of the AL. Amin received gunshots.
Police and local people said that there had long been a dispute between freedom fighter Abdur Salam Mia, also AL president of the ward no 9 unit of Chanpur union, and his ally Sohag, joint secretary of the union AL, and their rival Samsu Member, president of the union BNP.
Earlier, supporters of Salam and Sohag had driven Samsu and his followers away from the area when their party was in power.
But following the political changeover in the country on August 5, 2024, Samsu and his group returned home and had driven away his rival group from the area.
At about 5:00am on Friday, Salam and his followers tried to enter the area, but faced resistance from Samsu鈥檚 supporters, resulting in a clash.
Raipura upazila health officer Nuruddin Md Jahangir said that the two were brought dead.
The bodies were sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations while the injured in the clash were referred to the hospital for better treatment.
Raipura upazila BNP member secretary Abdur Rahman Khonon said that the incident was a local issue.
He declined to make any further comment on the issue.
The AL and BNP leaders who were allegedly involved in the incident could not be reached over phone for comment.
Raipura police station officer-in-charge Adil Mahmud said that additional police had been deployed in the area.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations.
A case will be filed over the incident, he said.
