Tamim Iqbal has undergone angioplasty after suffering a massive heart attack during Mohammedan Sporting Club’s match against the Shinepukur Cricket Club in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League at Savar on Monday.Â
Tamim, who is captaining Mohammedan this season, was present at the toss but couldn’t take the field as he soon started to feel pain in his chest. The 36-year-old former national captain was then rushed to nearby KPJ Specialised Hospital & Nursing College.Â
The director of the hospital, Dr Rajib Hasan, later briefed the media on Tamim’s latest condition.Â
He said, ‘Tamim Iqbal Bhai fell ill around 9:30am this morning. He was brought here in that condition, and treatment began immediately. Later, we realised that taking him to Dhaka wouldn’t be possible for various reasons.Â
‘His condition became critical afterwards. He was brought back in that critical state, and every necessary medical procedure was done. By the grace of Allah, his condition is now stable, Rajib told the reporters after Tamim underwent the heart surgery.Â
‘He suffered a heart attack, so an angiogram, angioplasty, and stenting were performed. By Allah's mercy, the stenting was done very smoothly and efficiently by Dr Maruf. The block [in his artery] has been completely removed,’ he added.Â
‘As we mentioned earlier, he was in a critical condition, but after the stenting, he is now under observation. The critical state isn’t fully over yet — it will take some time. We are all doing our absolute best,’ he concluded.
While filing this report, it was learnt that Tamim was responding and recovering well.Â
Earlier, Tamim himself at one point suggested travelling to Dhaka via an air ambulance, and that was also arranged to fly from the BKSP ground. However, while he was on his way back to BKSP, he felt unwell again.Â
He had to be taken to the hospital for the second time when he was suspected of having a ‘massive heart attack’.Â
The match between Mohammedan and Shinepukur is going on. However, a scheduled BCB meeting has been cancelled amidst the news of Tamim being unwell.Â
The family members, including Tamim’s elder brother and former national team opener Nafees Iqbal, are beside him at the hospital.Â
The board officials are also present there. Earlier, a scheduled BCB meeting has been cancelled amidst the news of Tamim being unwell.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus enquired about the health condition of Tamim Iqbal.Â
On behalf of the chief adviser, deputy press secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder spoke to Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizam Uddin Chowdhury.
