The chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday requested the inspector general of police to initiate the process for issuing Interpol red notices against 10 individuals including nine senior Awami League leaders.

The leaders, all close associates of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, are wanted in multiple cases for committing crimes against humanity during the July-August mass uprising in 2024, chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said in a view-exchanging meeting with reporters at the tribunal premises in Dhaka.

The Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime was ousted from power amid the mass uprising on August 5, 2024, the day when the fallen prime minister fled to India.

The nine Awami League leaders against whom the Interpol red notices were sought include the party general secretary Obaidul Quader, presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury, former state minister for power and energy Nasrul Hamid, former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat and  Dhaka South City Corporation’s former mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.

The prosecution also requested the IGP to take the initiative to issue an Interpol red notice against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s former defence and security affairs adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique.

That the tribunal’s arrest warrants and related case documents, along with the Investigation Agency’s request for red notices, are forwarded to the IGP through the home ministry, Tajul explained the procedure.

He said that the IGP would take steps to send the documents to Interpol.

Senior prosecutor Tamim Gazi Monwar Hossain told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the prosecution office must submit detailed information for each of the accused individuals to Interpol, including physical descriptions, probable foreign locations, the nature of the charges, and the potential penalties if convicted.

He added that a previous request for a red notice against Sheikh Hasina remained pending with Interpol.

‘Interpol considers various legal and human rights aspects before issuing red notices,’ Tamim explained.

Speaking at the meeting, Tamim said that the tribunal had so far issued arrest warrants for 141 individuals in connection with 22 miscellaneous cases relating to the mass uprising, enforced disappearances, and the attack on Hefazat rally at Shapla Chattar.

Of the 141 individuals, 54 accused have been arrested so far, he added.

According to Tamim, the office of the chief prosecutor has received 339 complaints to date. Arrest warrants in the 22 cases were sought as the Investigation Agency is yet to file formal charges against the accused.

He also noted that investigators are currently probing 39 cases selected from the pool of 339 complaints.

Prosecutors Abdus Sobhan Tarafder, Mizanul Islam, Shahidullah, Abdullah Al Noman, and Saimum Reza Pias were also present at the meeting attended by over 60 journalists from different media houses.
