Former law minister Anisul Huq, who was in police custody, was assaulted by a group of people on Narayanganj district court premises when he was being taken out of a courtroom Monday afternoon.

The former minister was produced before the court of Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Moinuddin Kadir in a case filed over the murder of Hafez Solaiman in Narayanganj during July-August mass uprising.

The incident took place in the court after it had allowed the police to take the former minister in their custody for four days for interrogation in the case, eyewitnesses said.

A video of the incident that was circulated on social media showed that the court police, instead of preventing the attackers, ran with Anisul and quickly put him in the prison van.  Narayanganj court’s police inspector Mohammad Qayum, however, claimed that the former minister was not assaulted.

‘Some lawyers created chaos after the hearing on remand prayer against him,’ he claimed.

He said that the court placed Anisul on a four-day remand in police custody.

‘The former minister was sent back to Dhaka Central Jail after the hearing,’ he added.

According to the police, 19-year-old Solaiman was shot on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the Shimrail area of Siddhirganj in Narayangnaj on August 5.

He later died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

On August 22, Solaiman’s brother-in-law Shamim Kabir filed a murder case with Siddhirganj police station against 51 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and former law minister Anisul Huq.
